New video: "You'll Be Back"
Remember Gideon from last month? He's back, and this time he's got a cello. (Dude can play anything with strings on it, it's truly maddening.)
This song is from the hit Broadway musical HAMILTON (which I'm desperately in love with).
Are you lot on the HamilTrain yet? 🚂choo choo!
The long version of the Hamilton pitch is this:
- It's a rap opera* currently running on Broadway about treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton (the guy on the $10 bill).
- *The distinction between a musical and an opera is important here: Because it is an 'opera', virtually no exposition or dialogue is omitted from the cast recording, and the soundtrack listener experiences the full narrative of the show.
- It was written by & stars composer/librettist Lin-Manuel Miranda (seen here debuting the title track at the White House), who won a bunch of Tonys for In The Heights, and also wrote that weird faux-reggae song playing in Maz's place in The Force Awakens.
- I'm convinced Hamilton is going to win every Tony award this year, and in 5 years when there are a dozen biographical rap musicals on Broadway, you're going to wish you had started listening to Hamilton now.
The short version is this:
Yes, it's a rap opera about Alexander Hamilton. I know it pitches weird, but let me remind you that if you're on this website right now, you're a nerd, and you have probably liked weirder stuff.
"You'll Be Back" is my favorite song from Hamilton, sung by King George III when he finds out that the colonies are petitioning for their independence.
When I was at TopatoCon listening through all of Hamilton for the first time, I stopped and listened to this song about 2 dozen times before I could move on with the story. So many other pieces in the show are also gems, but this was the song that I fell in love with first.
